Turning animal welfare science into real-world change.
Hello! I’m Dr Tayla Hammond BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD.
I’ve always loved animals, growing up around a menagerie of dogs, horses, pigs, chickens, and, even a mischief of rats!
My career has followed this passion, achieving a Masters and then a PhD in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, before working in academia and industry. Throughout my career, I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of brilliant science in animal welfare but it often stays in papers, reports, or technical language that doesn’t translate into real-world change. And that’s why I launched Animal Insights Consulting, to generate and translate science so that it can actually be used to improve animals’ lives.
I’m drawn to the messy, real-world side of welfare. The situations where it’s not black and white, where animals are part of public spaces, events, or systems that are entrenched in tradition. It’s about understanding what it’s like to be that animal: how they experience their environment, what they can see, hear, feel, and whether they have any real control over what’s happening to them. It’s also about understanding people: how decisions get made and what drives their behaviour. Without both it’s hard to generate the momentum to create real change.
I’m naturally curious and always learning, and I bring that into every project. I want to understand things properly, ask the right questions, and produce work that people can actually take and use to improve welfare.
